Our History and Parent Company

Hitachi Data Systems was formed in 1989 as a joint venture between Hitachi, Ltd. and Electronic Data Systems Corporation, and became a wholly owned subsidiary of Hitachi, Ltd. in 1999.

The year 2000 was a time of profound transformation for us, marked by a new focus, new leadership, new markets and a new way of doing business. Founded to sell Hitachi mainframe computers, the company changed to focus on storage systems for the S/390 and open systems markets. By April 2001, Hitachi Data Systems had become the world's fastest growing storage company.

Hitachi, Ltd., the parent of Hitachi Data Systems, was founded in 1910 as a repair shop for mining equipment. Now it is one of the world’s largest integrated electronics companies and 10th largest software company with total FY08 sales of $102 billion. Headquartered in Tokyo, Japan, Hitachi, Ltd. is number 52 on the 2009 Fortune Global 500® with more than 400,000 employees and over 943 subsidiaries.

Hitachi manufactures and markets more than 22,000 products, including computers, semiconductors, consumer products and power and industrial equipment. To ensure the technological leadership of its products, the company invests more than $4.3 billion annually in global research and development.

Benefits and Balance

Benefits, compensation, rewards and the proper balance between work and life are important to us all as individuals and employees. Our goal is to provide benefits to support your needs and those of your family. We recognize those needs change and we offer a wide variety of benefits to meet them.

In each country where we operate we offer a competitive pay, bonus and benefits package. In general we offer health and dental coverage, paid time off for holidays and illness, retirement (or company investment plan), assistance with furthering your education and a variety of other special benefit programs.  Most benefits are effective on your date of hire unless stated otherwise.

We also offer competitive levels of annual, parental, military or personal leaves (specific to each country). Many employees take advantage of special work arrangements such as telecommuting, working from a remote office or utilizing flex-time to start their day earlier or later to fit their needs. All our programs are based on what is appropriate and possible for the position and the location where our employees reside.

Development

We encourage employees to learn continuously and we support ongoing professional development. Our Leadership Development program focuses on key leadership skills based on our Hitachi Spirit and Leadership fundamentals. The Hitachi Data Systems Academy provides technical and sales training as well as customer certifications. Of course, on-the-job learning and stretch opportunities are part of our development philosophy as well.

Diversity

A diverse workforce creates a richer work environment complete with better thinking, creative solutions and teamwork that spans culture, time zones, gender and areas of expertise. We are committed to a diverse workforce leveraging the best every employee has to offer.

Communications

Typically we hold quarterly, global “town hall” meetings led by our Company Executives for all employees. We also have regular departmental conference calls, annual employee surveys, weekly newsletters and more. We also believe communication is a two-way street and we provide ample opportunities for you to share your ideas, views and suggestions for improvement.
