Storage Management Initiative Specification (SMI-S)

In 2002 the Storage Networking Industry Association (SNIA) launched the Storage Management Initiative (SMI), chartered to deliver open storage network management interface technology. What emerged is known today as the Storage Management Initiative Specification (SMI-S). Efficient management of a multivendor storage area network (SAN) is a key concern for end-users and integrators alike. Today's storage management requires using uncoordinated applications from multiple vendors. This mix of management applications lacks the functionality, distribution, security, and reliability required to ensure simple SAN storage management. SNIA's goal with SMI-S is to have "all storage managed by the SMI interface," as the unifying factor between all objects that must be managed in a SAN and the tools used to manage them, thus simplifying the task of storage management.

Hitachi Data Systems is committed to and fully supports SNIA in its SMI-S efforts, both through active participation and contributions, and through comprehensive product support.

  • Hitachi HiCommand® Device Manager software includes an SMI-S compliant Common Information Model Object Manager (CIMOM) that provides support for Hitachi storage systems. For more information, see our HiCommand Device Manager brochure and SMI-S documentation.
  • Hitachi HiCommand Storage Services Manager software manages heterogeneous storage using SMI-S protocols. For more information, see our HiCommand Storage Services Manager brochure.

Additionally, SNIA-CTP (Conformance Test Program) certification is an integral step that supports efforts by Hitachi Data Systems to bring third-party conformance standards to the marketplace. The SNIA-CTP consists of master test suites that are developed, owned, and operated by SNIA. Hitachi Data Systems performs server and storage system profile testing for a variety of storage-related tasks, including logical unit number (LUN) creation, LUN mapping and masking, and storage pool manipulation and settings and element management capabilities.

To obtain more information on storage vendors including Hitachi Data Systems, whose products have achieved CTP certification in support of the SMI-S standard and the Storage Networking Industry Association (SNIA), please visit: Note that SMI-S profiles implemented by providers passing the SNIA-CTP will vary from provider to provider. As a result, not all of the features in the standard are available for all the providers that have passed the SNIA-CTP. To see details on which features Hitachi Data Systems, supports, please see the conforming providers page listed earlier in this paragraph or the HiCommand Device Manager software SMI-S documentation.
