Dataset Replication for IBM zOS simplifies the management of ShadowImage volumes in an OS/390 environment by automatically generating the JCL and commands to perform the required operating system housekeeping functions. The software rewrites the operating system management information such as Volume Table Of Contents (VTOC), Virtual Volume Data Set (VVDS), and Volume (VTOCIX). Dataset Replication then renames System Managed Storage (SMS) constructs and the data set names, and it creates a user catalog on the target volumes (T-VOL) to catalogue the selected data sets after they are renamed.
Dataset Replication consists of the two S/390 programs—HRULVDP and HRULVDX—which perform four functions:
Prepare for copy operation—define data set selection
Copy and split the volume
Rename volume id
Catalogue data sets and rename the data set’s SMS constructs
Share Information for the Competitive Advantage
DataReplication and ShadowImage OS/390 simplify and accelerate your ability to share and access time-critical information for decision support, populating data warehouses, and performing analysis or other data mining operations
Improve Backups
Perform normal backup operations on a copy of production data while your critical applications continue to run unaffected
Improve data availability and access
Dataset Replication and ShadowImage OS/390 provide simultaneous access of current data for back-up, decision support, and application testing to ensure 24x7 availability
Dataset Replication and the ShadowImage QuikSplit function enhance performance by making a ShadowImage volume immediately available to host systems once a split command is executed
Productivity and Process Improvements
Dataset Replication simplifies ShadowImage software management by automating the ability to select, replicate, rename, and catalog OS/390 datasets
Dataset Replication eliminates the need to code tedious, error-prone JCL and thus reduces human errors
