How Server Virtualization Really Affects
Storage Strategies |
|
|
|

Server virtualization has benefits far beyond its initial promise, writes Enterprise Strategy Group (ESG). After the initial consolidation of servers, virtualization gives you significant opportunity to expand your business continuity and disaster recovery (BC/DR) strategies. Many data centers implement sophisticated BC/DR strategies just for their most critical data in order to strike a balance between risk and cost. However, server virtualization moves the tipping point and allows top tier BC/DR for more systems and more data. ESG suggests that virtualization can improve or even make possible BC/DR for the first time on some applications.
In addition, ESG finds that when storage virtualization integrates closely with server virtualization, IT professionals see better end-to-end efficiency in their virtualization initiatives. But see for yourself with their free white paper |

Just like you, Hitachi IT professionals work hard to save energy to benefit the environment and lower costs. In Yokohama, Japan, environmental leadership has defined the city. Hitachi proudly continues that tradition by opening the world’s most eco-friendly and power efficient data center. It features industry leading storage systems, servers and networking equipment. Hitachi’s world famous R&D expertise contributed additional technologies for significant power, cooling and space benefits throughout.
The combination of Hitachi Dynamic Provisioning and storage virtualization provides significant improvements in capacity utilization, but it also lowers power and cooling needs. Any organization benefits from managing fewer storage devices, requiring less electricity and space. This also has immediate improvements to overall storage economics.

Think you have a long history of data to store? How about more than 400 years of it? That would be your challenge if you managed the Amsterdam City Archives. They back up for posterity all of the data that the city has generated over four centuries. How do they archive all of that? |
With the Hitachi Content Archive Platform, of course.
But they wanted more than just to protect the past. They needed to plan for the next 400 years as well. More than hardware and software was required to do the job right. So they sought a technology partner they could trust to “think along with us” for the future. They found it with Hitachi Data Systems and our local reseller, Data Matters. See the video on HDS TV. |

Capable Cable Company
See the success story
When you’re in the wire business you’re used to a lot of flexibility. But the IT professionals at Industrial Electric Wire & Cable knew their legacy storage systems were holding them back. It was time to upgrade. They searched for an advanced system with high availability, blazing performance and snapshot technology for data cloning and protection. They also wanted storage virtualization and high I/O throughput to avoid performance bottlenecks. Their choice? Hitachi Adaptable Modular Storage. “Clearly impressive,” said Matthew Stroh, Administrator for IEWC.
One of the new systems is a Hitachi Adaptable Modular Storage 2300. It’s already at work with high data transfer rates and exceptional bandwidth for their SAP modules and their storage virtualization. “These systems are so resilient and flexible and easily expandable,” Mr. Stroh added. Remember, he knows flexibility when he sees it.
