ESG Lab Validation Study Reports Combination of Hitachi Software and Hardware Delivers Game-Changing Technology
SANTA CLARA, Calif. – November 30, 2005–Hitachi Data Systems Corporation, provider of Services Oriented Storage Solutions™ solutions and a wholly owned subsidiary of Hitachi, Ltd. (NYSE: HIT), announced that leading industry analyst research firm Enterprise Strategy Group (ESG) has named the Hitachi HiCommand® storage management suite "best-in-class." In a recent Lab Validation report, ESG performed hands-on testing of the Hitachi TagmaStore™ Universal Storage Platform, TagmaStore Network Storage Controller, and HiCommand Tiered Storage Manager, and concluded that Hitachi's hardware and software products combine to deliver "game-changing technology that has obvious and quantifiable value."
The Universal Storage Platform and Network Storage Controller provide advanced, large-scale virtualization capabilities which enable an intelligent tiered storage network consisting of multiple, heterogeneous storage systems with different price, performance, and data protection capabilities. Using HiCommand Tiered Storage Manager, customers can move data moved between storage tiers dynamically and non-disruptively, while applications continue to operate seamlessly.
"ESG has spoken with customers who have saved tens of thousands, hundreds of thousands, and even millions of dollars by implementing an intelligent tiered storage environment," said Tony Asaro, senior analyst, Enterprise Strategy Group. "The key is to combine tiered storage with intelligent software that can centrally manage the tiers and migrate data dynamically, transparently, and without disruption. ESG believes that Hitachi's unique approach to storage virtualization and innovative software solutions, makes them the leader in tiered storage software deployments today."
According to ESG, the combination of the Universal Storage Platform or Network Storage Controller with HiCommand Tiered Storage Manager can provide transparent and non-disruptive data migration of heterogeneous SAN-based storage systems—servers do not have to be taken offline, the process does not require a team of people, and the actual data migration is very fast and reliable.
"Data migration is a fundamental process within the data center. However, there is a great deal of misunderstanding and lack of awareness about the tools available to perform this task," said Asaro. "ESG Lab testing has shown that Tiered Storage Manager is not only capable of managing on-line migrations, but is also easy to use. Tiers of storage are easily defined and managed at the application level, migration candidates are automatically detected, and migrations are performed using a simple four-step wizard."
"Tiered storage is a core component of our Services Oriented Storage Solutions solutions, enabling customers to precisely match application quality-of-service requirements to storage system functionality," said Jack Domme, senior vice president, Global Solutions Strategy and Development, Hitachi Data Systems. "We believe that we have the only solution for these environments that not only moves data between tiers, but also manages disparate storage assets from a single management interface. ESG has, indeed, validated that intelligent tiered storage management is a reality and that the HiCommand Suite is best-in-class. These capabilities are available from Hitachi Data Systems today."
The HiCommand® Suite consists of a number of separately purchased modules which provide application-centric capacity and performance management of the entire storage infrastructure, tuning delivery of storage system performance, availability, recoverability, and functionality attributes to the requirements of vital business applications. With these modules storage administrators monitor, visually render, and administer the data infrastructure as a whole, including storage from multiple vendors as well as the switches, host bus adapters, servers, and file systems that serve business applications.
