Hitachi Data Systems Promotes Software Visionary Jack Domme to Senior Vice President, Global Solutions Strategy & Development

Recognized Innovator of Storage Software Brings Customer Focus, Proven Track Record in Leading Delivery of Services Oriented Storage Solutions Solutions

SANTA CLARA, Calif.—October 25, 2005 – Hitachi Data Systems Corporation, a wholly owned subsidiary of Hitachi, Ltd. (NYSE: HIT), today announced the promotion of software visionary Jack Domme to senior vice president of Hitachi Data Systems' Global Solutions Strategy & Development Group. In this new role, Domme reports to Dave Roberson, Hitachi Data Systems president and COO, and joins the company's executive committee.

Domme is credited with driving the worldwide success of Hitachi's HiCommand® storage management software suite—accelerating sales and gains in global market share. In his new role, Domme will lead the Global Solutions Strategy & Development Group in delivering Services Oriented Storage Solutions™ solutions to the market. Functions in this Group include the newly integrated Hardware and Software Product Management and Product Marketing groups, as well as Global Solution Services, Technical Operations, the Technology Office, Business Development and Alliances, and the HDS Academy.

"As we move to the next level of delivering Services Oriented Storage Solutions solutions, we need a leader who has the vision, the insight into customer needs and market opportunities, and the proven ability to mobilize a global team. With Jack, we have that leader," said Dave Roberson, president and chief operating officer, Hitachi Data Systems. "Jack has spearheaded the team innovation and execution that is driving the growing demand for our advanced HiCommand software offerings. As the head of HDS' Global Solutions Strategy & Development Group, Jack is well positioned to capitalize on this success and advance the creation and adoption of our best-in-class storage solutions in enterprises of all sizes worldwide."

Analysts Praise Company Moves to Deliver on Customer Demand

"According to IDC's Worldwide Quarterly Storage Software Tracker, Q2 2005, in the four quarters ending June, 2005, HDS grew storage software revenue 25-percent, while the industry grew 15-percent," said John McArthur, group vice president and general manager, Information Infrastructure and Enabling Technologies, IDC. "HDS' Storage Management Software Group, which has been under the direction of Jack Domme, has delivered impressive results. With the combination of previously independent storage hardware, networking and software areas into a single entity under Jack, we expect HDS to shorten the time it takes to bring new products and features to market."

"The merging of product management and product marketing under one reporting structure is a very good idea. And promoting Jack Domme to run it is also smart. Jack and his team have done an excellent job with the HDS software business by executing on a well thought out plan," said Tony Asaro, sr. analyst, Enterprise Strategy Group. "Involving users early in the development phase, a very close relationship with Hitachi, Ltd., and a logical and pragmatic approach to make versus buy, have been hallmarks of the HDS software team. I fully expect to see this carried over to the new organization. The results will be an even tighter integration of the products, and a faster time to market, both of which mean value to the user."

"Hitachi, Ltd. and Hitachi Data Systems continue making incremental infrastructure improvements that yield benefits to their customers," said John Webster, senior analyst and partner, Data Mobility Group. "Promoting Jack Domme, an executive with a proven track record for execution, to head up the new streamlined product management and product marketing group will enable even tighter integration of the product lines which cannot help but deliver greater value to customers."

Domme Builds on Track Record of Global Storage Software Innovation, Success

Jack Domme brings to the Global Solutions Strategy & Development Group a strong track record in delivering products that map to market demand. Formerly, Domme was vice president of Hitachi Data Systems' Storage Management Software Group where he was responsible for software business strategy, strategic alliances, product architecture, and development of the company's HiCommand® Suite of software.

Under Domme's leadership, Hitachi Data Systems software revenue has grown rapidly—expanding the company's market penetration and establishing Hitachi as significantly more than just an innovative high-end hardware supplier—prompting Enterprise Strategy Group to say, "Hitachi is on a path to becoming a formidable player in the storage management market."

The company now boasts one of the industry's most comprehensive storage software suites, featuring unmatched functionality for virtualization, storage-agnostic universal replication, business continuity, and storage and data management. Domme also was key to the original Hitachi Data Systems OEM agreement with AppIQ, setting the precedent for extending storage management capabilities by which other companies in the storage market have followed. Today, the HiCommand software vision combined with the Hitachi family of superior storage products provides for an integrated strategy enabling the delivery of Services Oriented Storage Solutions solutions to its customers.

"The focus on our customers' application requirements have led to the innovation of software and hardware technology and solutions that uniquely position Hitachi Data Systems to deliver on the next-generation storage demands of companies around the globe," said Jack Domme. "I am excited by the opportunity to integrate our industry-leading product offerings with the strategic alliances, consulting services, and education to enable their successful implementation worldwide."

In another move to further align operations, Hitachi Data Systems also announced that the HDS Customer Service and Support function will report to Scott Genereux, executive vice president and general manager of Worldwide Sales, Channels and Support at Hitachi Data Systems. With Genereux leading a single, global integrated organization for sales and support, Hitachi Data Systems will be well positioned to capitalize on the growing market demand for storage solutions by enhancing support for current customers while aggressively pursuing new revenue and market opportunities.
