Hitachi Data Systems Takes Leadership of High-End RAID Storage Market

Latest Research By Industry Leading Analyst Firm ShowsHitachi Data Systems to Hold Top Market Share in Enterprise StorageRevenue

SANTA CLARA, CA — December 15, 2003— Hitachi Data Systems, a wholly-ownedsubsidiary of Hitachi, Ltd. (NYSE: HIT), was recognized recently byGartner Dataquest as the market-leader in enterprise storagerevenue in 2002, with an almost nine percent advantage over thenext highest vendor. Hitachi Data Systems was the only one of thethree leading enterprise storage vendors to show year-over-yeargrowth in high-end systems revenue from 2001 to 2002, the mostrecent year for which there is complete data.

This information is based on the Gartner Dataquest researchfigures presented by Josh Krischer, Gartner's vice president andresearch director for enterprise servers and storage, Europe, inhis presentation on enterprise disk storage systems at the Gartner22nd Annual Data Center Conference, held December 8-10 in LasVegas, Nevada.

"It has been very apparent that customer acceptance of ourLightning-class enterprise storage systems, and therefore, ourmarketshare, has been increasing," said Scott Genereux, vicepresident, global marketing & business development, HitachiData Systems. "The data released today is confirmation that ouropen and collaborative approach to the market is working —including our strong relationships with Hewlett Packard, SunMicrosystems, and a global network of over three hundred VARs."

Earlier this year, Hitachi announced extensions to itsrelationships with both HP and Sun. The current joint technologyagreement and original equipment manufacturer relationship with HP,for the foundation hardware used to develop the HP StorageWorksDisk Array XP family, now runs through 2008. The global distributorand related collaborative agreements with Sun now run through2006.

The sales generated by these relationships, as well as throughHitachi Data Systems' direct sales force, have made the companynumber one.
