Addresses Market Demands for Compliance-readyStorage
Enables Multi-tiered Storage Deployment and EnhancesBusiness Continuity Options
Further Scales Massive Consolidation
SANTA CLARA, California, 8 October, 2003- Hitachi Data Systems, awholly-owned subsidiary of Hitachi, Ltd. (NYSE:HIT) today announcedplans to help customers address regulatory compliance and datamanagement requirements through strategic enhancements to itsindustry-leading Hitachi Lightning 9900™ V Series family ofenterprise storage systems. In addition, the company announcedsoftware products that enable customers to deploy multi-tieredstorage configurations and build robust business continuityplatforms.
Unlike many storage vendors, which enforce a closed, locked viewof data lifecycle management and data retention, Hitachi DataSystems leverages customers' existing investments to manage andretain data throughout its entire lifecycle across existingplatforms. In addition, Hitachi Data Systems is the only storagevendor that enables data to be moved directly between modular andenterprise storage systems without host intervention. Thisflexibility enables multi-tier storage solutions with higherperformance and lower overall costs.
"Companies are understandably concerned with the impact ofemerging regulations," said Steve TenBarge, Vice President, StorageInfrastructure Management, Hitachi Data Systems. "Hitachi's OpenLDEV Guard, HiCopy, and Three Data Center Copy represent importantsteps in our plans to help customers address critical businessrequirements while creating fully compliant data environments. Onour own, and with ISVs, we will introduce new products and serviceson an ongoing basis to help customers meet these evolvingregulations."
Data Retention
Hitachi Data Systems today announced an open systems version ofits LDEV Guard data retention manager — fully integrated intoall Lightning 9900 V Series storage systems — that allowscustomers to preserve and protect sensitive enterprise information.Functioning as a WORM (Write Once Read Many), Open LDEV Guardenables immutable record retention and the creation of compliantstorage environments. Once data has been written, it can beretrieved and read by authorized applications, but not altered ordeleted, for the mandated retention period — a function notintegrated into any other vendor's storage offering. In addition,Open LDEV Guard properties are preserved through HitachiShadowImage™ in-system replication, Hitachi TrueCopy™remote replication, or HiCopy cross-system replication between theLightning 9900 V Series and Thunder 9500 V Series storagesystems.
The value of data changes over time, and while retention isimportant, matching the value of the data with the cost of storageis critical. To help companies store data cost-effectively, HiCopyfacilitates non-disruptive, policy-based data migration acrosstiers of storage to where it makes the best economic sense. ForI/O-intensive data applications, Hitachi today announced 15KRPM/73GB hard disk drives — an excellent balance of price andperformance.
"Customers are now empowered to execute a multi-tiered storagestrategy", said Tony Prigmore, a Sr. Analyst at the EnterpriseStorage Group, "by leveraging Hitachi Data Systems' comprehensivesuite of storage systems and data replication and movement softwareproducts. HiCommand provides a central management point, furtherimproving customer efficiency."
Business Continuity
Another important consideration in meeting regulatoryrequirements is the ability to comply with the terms of resumptionof service agreements. Rapid resumption of service (SLAs) isincreasingly mandated by industry and government organizations. Aspart of today's announcements, Hitachi introduced Three Data CenterCopy, which provides secure, rapid resumption of service, regardless of the scope of disaster or incident. By concurrentlyutilizing proven Hitachi TrueCopy synchronous and asynchronousreplication technologies across data centers in multiple geographicregions, delivery of SLAs are assured.
Three Data Center Copy is implemented for mainframe environmentsusing Hitachi CopyCentral ™, which automates centralizedenterprise-wide management of Hitachi TrueCopy and ShadowImagesoftware through a single, consistent management interface.Additionally, Hitachi introduced eCopy, which provides serverlessbackup between the Lightning 9900 V Series systems and a variety ofsupported tape drives. By leveraging ShadowImage technology, serveroverhead typically associated with backups are eliminated.
Consolidation
Making the most of existing systems and consolidating enterprisestorage resources is top-of-mind for enterprise storageadministrators. By doubling the maximum cache capacity from 64GB to128GB, doubling control memory from 3GB to 6GB in theHi-Star™ architecture, and providing non-disruptive fieldupgrade capabilities, Hitachi is providing the products needed toreduce TCO and improve ROI. In fact, Hitachi Data Systems iscurrently shipping an average of 16 terabytes per Lightning 9900 VSeries system, a 220% increase from when the product was originallyintroduced in May, 2002.
"United Airlines Loyalty Services purchased the Lightning 9900 VSeries system to consolidate our storage infrastructure and toreduce costs," said Gary Pilafas, Senior Systems and StorageArchitect, United Airline Loyalty Services. "As a result, we wereable to more than double performance and capacity which allowed usto spend more time ensuring that our customers were able to accessflight and awards information in real time — a huge advantagein a very competitive market."
Finally, to help mainframe customers further consolidate theirstorage environments, Hitachi has announced a 50% increase in ESCONconnectivity to 48 ports, while broader support for FICON Cascadingincreases flexibility for other mainframe users.
Prices for the Hitachi Lightning 9900 V Series range from$200,000 to $8 million, depending on model and configuration. Keyhardware enhancements to the Lightning 9900 V Series are availablenow. Other features will be available within the next 90 days.
