Santa Clara, California — June 18, 2003 — Three customers of Hitachi Data Systems, a wholly owned subsidiary of Hitachi, Ltd. (NYSE: HIT), were honored with "Best Practices in Storage" awards at the Storage Networking World (SNW) conference held at the JW Marriott Desert Ridge Resort in Phoenix, Arizona. Winner TELUS Mobility and honorable mention Skywalker Sound dominated the Innovation and Promise category. eBay received top honors in the Storage Reliability category.
"Congratulations to TELUS Mobility, eBay and Skywalker Sound for their superior storage practices," said Scott Genereux, vice president, Global Marketing and Business Development, Hitachi Data Systems. "Storage Networking World's awards are a testament to the planning and design of the Hitachi Freedom Storage system architecture and software and validate our belief that Hitachi Data Systems customers are among the leading innovators in technology infrastructure."
"The SNW 'Best Practices in Storage' Awards Program recognizes a broad group of enterprises and the innovative applications of storage technology that have enhanced their business," said Maryfran Johnson, editor in chief at Computerworld and one of the programs' judges. "This diverse roster of winners - ranging from technology and medical companies, to financial firms and even an NFL franchise - demonstrates the prevalence of storage technology."
The "Best Practices in Storage" Awards Program honors companies with unique storage solutions in five categories: Systems Implementation, Storage Reliability, Data Recovery, Financial Return, Innovation and Promise.
TELUS Mobility, a large national wireless and data provider across Canada, won the Innovation and Promise award for its SAN implementation based on Hitachi Freedom Storage™ Lightning storage systems supported by Hitachi's storage management software. Hitachi Resource Manager software offers a centralized point of control that allows TELUS to monitor and configure the geographically dispersed Lightning systems easily and efficiently. Hitachi SANtinel™ provides an increased level of protection that gives TELUS real peace of mind. Hitachi ShadowImage™ enables them to conduct backups, data warehousing/data mining, and assist with a data migration from an HP-UX to Sun Solaris environment. Hitachi ShadowImage offers flexibility and offers an array of choice on how to perform backups and application development and testing tasks. Hitachi CruiseControl™ delivers a "no downtime" approach to migrating extremely utilized logical disks from RAID-5 groups to RAID 0+1 groups with the benefit of achieving `never-seen before performance' and is able to reduce service times to the disk by 96%.
EBay, the world's online marketplace, won the Storage Reliability award for its SAN implementation based on Hitachi Freedom Storage architecture using Lightning 9960, Thunder 9200, Sun StorEdge 9910, Sun StorEdge 9960, Sun StorEdge 9970V, and Sun StorEdge 9980V.
Skywalker Sound, a Lucasfilm Ltd. company and the premiere post-production sound facility in the world, received honorable mention in the Innovation and Promise category for their implementation of Hitachi Freedom Storage Lightning 9980V™ system with 12TB of capacity to centralize all of its editorial storage. The solution successfully scales in performance to support 75 Macintoshes running real-time, highly dense audio tracks. Hitachi ShadowImage™ software creates point-in-time copies of Mac volumes that are then delivered to the recording systems. HiCommand™ Device Manager manages the whole array, saving IT staff the headaches of the previous, decentralized management system.
