New SNIA SMI Forum to Drive the Broad Adoption of Industry Standards to Speed the Delivery of CIM Compliant Products
SANTA CLARA, California — November 4, 2002 — Hitachi, Ltd., (NYSE: HIT), and Hitachi Data Systems today announced participation in the Storage Networking Association (SNIA)'s Storage Management Initiative (SMI) Forum. Hitachi Data Systems will join other storage industry leaders in the forum to deliver products compliant with the Common Information Model (CIM) standard by 2003. Future strategic CIM efforts for this storage management initiative will be driven by the SMI Forum.
Hitachi Data Systems' participation in the SMI Forum and endorsement of the SNIA SMI is a part of the open, collaborative business model promoted in the Hitachi TrueNorth™ vision. Hitachi aims to provide customers with the freedom of choice to take advantage of multi-vendor, interoperable storage solutions based on industry standards. Products built using the SNIA SMI Specification and CIM/ Web-Based Enterprise Management (WBEM) technologies will help address storage customers' needs to lower total cost of ownership through heterogeneous storage management.
"The participation of leading storage vendors such as Hitachi Data Systems in the SMI Forum is fundamental to the success of the Storage Management Initiative and to the industry-wide adoption of open standards," said Sheila Childs, Chairperson of the SNIA Board of Directors and Vice President of Product Management for Legato Systems. "Hitachi Data Systems' continued involvement in the SNIA and its commitment to delivering CIM-compliant products clearly shows the company's resolution to making open, interoperable storage networks a reality."
"Hitachi Data Systems has made the pursuit of open standards for storage networking an integral part of our business strategy," said Scott Genereux, vice president, Global Marketing and Business Development, Hitachi Data Systems. "Under the TrueNorth vision we have pledged not only to work for interoperability through industry standards, but to make those standards a reality within our products. The SMI Forum will be a critical industry-driving force to promote CIM/WBEM-based storage management solutions. We will continue to work closely with the SNIA because we believe that open standards-based solutions provide our customers with freedom to choose the best storage solutions and to lower total cost of ownership."
The SNIA SMI Forum will drive and support the development and broad adoption of SNIA and complementary industry standards from which vendors can build interoperable management applications and facilitate the integration of storage products into interoperable multi-vendor storage networks. The Forum has established a goal of having 30 percent of all storage vendors' products become SMI-S compliant by 2003; 60 percent of all vendors' products by 2004, and 100 percent by 2005. Hitachi Data Systems will participate in Forum activities including the initial demonstration of a SAN using CIM/WEBM-enabled products at Storage Networking World the week of October 28-29.
