Auspex and Hitachi Data Systems Verify Interoperability of SAN-NAS Gateway with Hitachi Freedom Storage

Auspex NSc3000 NAS Gateway Combined with Hitachi Freedom Storage to Provide Customers with Broad Range of Storage Topology Options

SANTA CLARA, California — Sept 25, 2002 — Auspex Systems, Inc. (Nasdaq: ASPX) and Hitachi Data Systems, a wholly owned subsidiary of Hitachi, Ltd. (NYSE: HIT) today announced the successful completion of interoperability tests of Auspex's NSc3000 Network Storage Controller, a high-performance file serving platform for Network Attached Storage (NAS) with Hitachi Freedom Storage™ Lightning 9900™ Series and Thunder 9200™ systems. This will provide heterogeneous connectivity when sharing a common storage array pool between Direct Attached Storage (DAS), SAN, and NAS, giving customers the flexibility and freedom to choose the storage topologies that meet their specific business and IT requirements.

Customers can now consolidate their existing storage into a single, easy-to-manage SAN-class storage pool in both the mid-tier and enterprise environments. Auspex's NSc3000 provides enterprise-level, high availability NAS functionality for mission critical environments when attached to the Lightning 9900 Series systems and for mid-tier implementations with the SAN-ready Thunder 9200 storage platform. Customers can now manage both NAS file-based information and SAN block data on the same highly scalable storage platform connected directly or through SAN switches. The combined offering changes the paradigm of storage by eliminating the need for stand-alone NAS systems.

"Together, Auspex and Hitachi Data Systems are providing a solution that meets the diverse needs of enterprise customers, offering the simplicity and heterogeneous data sharing capabilities of a NAS, combined with the high availability, scalability, capacity and consolidation of a SAN," said Mike Worhach, President of Auspex Systems. "We are excited about the opportunity to work with Hitachi Data Systems and the significant impact this combined offering has in the storage marketplace."

"Promoting open, interoperable storage solutions is a key principle of our TrueNorth™ strategy," said Scott Genereux, vice president, Global Marketing and Business Development. "By verifying interoperability with Auspex we give our customers the ability to choose the best products to fit their storage needs. The combination of enterprise NAS functionality from the Auspex NSc3000 with the Lightning 9900 Series and Thunder 9200 storage systems enables our customers to more quickly adopt new storage solutions and get the most out of their SAN infrastructures."

Auspex NSc3000
