Hitachi Executive Tops Byte and Switch Storage Networking Stars List

Naoya Takahashi, Hitachi Disk Array President, Honored for Development of Lightning 9900 Series Storage Systems

SANTA CLARA, California - September 9, 2002 — Hitachi Data Systems, a wholly owned subsidiary of Hitachi, Ltd. (NYSE: HIT), is pleased to announce that online storage publication Byte and Switch has named Naoya Takahashi the number one storage networking star on its first "Top Ten Storage Networking Stars" list, a ranking of the most influential people in storage networking. Naoya Takahashi, head of the disk array business at Hitachi, Ltd., is credited with development of the breakthrough Hitachi Freedom Storage™ Lightning™ 9900 Series, announced in June 2000.

Mr. Takahashi and his engineering team designed the revolutionary Hi-Star™ crossbar switch architecture employed in the Lightning 9900 Series systems. Now in its second generation, the Lightning 9900 V Series delivers nearly three times the bandwidth as the original implementation. A storage engineering veteran, Mr. Takahashi has been with Hitachi's disk array business for 30 years. As the Byte and Switch article notes, "What this man doesn't know about disk arrays isn't worth knowing."

"Naoya Takahashi is truly a visionary in storage systems design. We're very happy to see his contributions recognized, as well as this validation of Hitachi's technology leadership from an influential storage networking publication like Byte and Switch," said Dave Roberson, president and COO, Hitachi Data Systems. "Today's IT managers are facing the challenges of managing ever-growing storage capacity and data access rates with steady-state resources. The Hi-Star switched architecture designed under Mr. Takahashi's engineering leadership delivers the horsepower to solve these challenges and provide a path for future management and growth."

The Lightning 9900 V Series

The newest version of the Lightning 9900 Series, the Lightning 9900 V Series, represents the most technologically advanced storage platform in the industry. Leveraging its second-generation switched architecture, the Lightning 9900 V Series demonstrates the highest scalability, performance, availability and reliability in the industry. Capitalizing further on the Hitachi innovations of Virtual Storage Ports and Host Storage Domains, the Lightning 9900 V supports the nearly unlimited scalable addition of open systems transaction servers. These unique functions combined with its high bandwidth provide customers with the only storage systems that can support the rapidly accelerating growth in transaction rates.
