Siemens Energy and Automation Streamlines Business Processes with Hitachi Data Systems

New Storage Infrastructure Reduces Costs and Facilitates Enterprise Storage Management

SANTA CLARA, California, May 30, 2002 — Hitachi Data Systems, the world's fastest growing enterprise storage provider and a wholly-owned subsidiary of Hitachi, Ltd. (NYSE: HIT), today announced that Siemens Energy and Automation has streamlined its information management processes by consolidating its enterprise Storage Area Network (SAN) with the Hitachi Freedom Storage™ Lightning 9900™ Series Model 9960.

"In order to keep pace with our company's explosive growth, we've significantly re-engineered our business processes, including IT support for over 7,000 business users at 100 sites across the United States" said John Kempson, Director of IT Operations and Services, Siemens Energy and Automation. "Consequently, we decided to consolidate our core servers at our headquarter's data center, and needed to implement a powerful storage area network to support the new configuration. We evaluated a number of leading enterprise storage solutions, but decided to go with Hitachi Data Systems because its leading technology, outstanding customer service, and competitive pricing provided us with the flexibility we needed to build a more efficient storage infrastructure."

Hitachi Data Systems has enabled Siemens Energy and Automation to significantly reduce IT management and cost burdens, increase its storage capacity, and pave the way toward future growth by offering a smooth and scalable growth path. The new Lightning 9960 SAN configuration is being used to support mission-critical data from financial management, order entry systems, data warehousing, and other database software and applications. The Hitachi solution provides cost effective, 24/7 access to these applications and data, with 20-30% better performance than the company's prior solution.

"It has been an incredibly positive experience to deal with people who care about customer service as much as the folks at Hitachi Data Systems," commented Kempson. "Their sales, systems engineering, and technical support staff have been tremendous throughout the entire implementation, and continue to provide outstanding ongoing support for the equipment. This strong focus on the customer extends all the way through to our end users. Fast response time, and quick, decisive actions taken by the Hitachi Data Systems team saved the day on many occasions, allowing us to deliver as promised to our customers — without missing a beat."

"Hitachi Data Systems is the emerging leader in enterprise storage technology and management because it offers the most advanced technology, a bullet-proof reputation for quality and products and support, and the best ROI on the market," said Marlene Woodworth, executive vice president, Global Marketing and Operations, Hitachi Data Systems. "We have the strongest sales momentum in the category because we provide the best solutions for customers like Siemens, who value the long-term viability of their enterprise storage systems, and choose to go with the best."
