Hitachi Data Systems Launches Professional Services to Help Customers Keep Information Online All the Time

Services Leverage Hitachi TrueCopy Software to Help Customers Avoid Costs of Developing and Supporting In-House Experts for Business Continuity, Disaster Recovery, Data Migration, Point-in-Time Data Replication

SANTA CLARA, California, 19 June, 2001 — Hitachi Data Systems today announced it will offer a new professional services portfolio called Data Protection Services to help customers deploy large-scale data--movement and data-replication facilities for business continuity, disaster recovery, application testing, and data mining. This portfolio includes consulting and implementation services to set up remote copy and point-in-time copy functions, using Hitachi Freedom Storage™ Software products such as Hitachi TrueCopy™, Hitachi ShadowImage™, and NanoCopy™.

The new data-protection offering complements a variety of other Hitachi Data Systems professional services in areas such as capacity planning and Storage Area Network (SAN) planning, design, and implementation.

"Many of our long-time customers have called on us time and again to address business issues, such as continuity and disaster recovery, that require a high-level of storage-systems expertise," said Jim Davidson, Hitachi Data Systems vice president and general manager, U.S. sales. "With a rapidly expanding customer base, we're seeing many new customers face these same issues, so we've formalized these services, leveraging our strong consulting skills. The Data Protection Services we're launching today will highlight these skills in some of the most critical projects faced by data-center managers."

Typical of these projects are maintaining duplicate data at remote locations as part of a disaster-recovery plan, and creating multiple point-in-time copies for use in hot backup/recovery for databases, data migration from an old system to a newly installed one, testing new applications or conducting data-mining studies.

"We've used Hitachi Freedom Storage systems for over four years," said Jim Serina, Tampa Electric Company IT Project Leader. "When we decided to implement a disaster recovery plan using real-time remote copy, we asked Hitachi Data Systems for help with design and implementation. Their experts were knowledgeable, professional, and quick to respond. Since then we've used them for several projects including extending our remote copy and upgrading our storage hardware. Hitachi Data Systems has done an excellent job for us."

The combination of Hitachi Freedom Storage™ software and systems and expert professional services that make up the Data Protection Services offering gives customers control over their rapidly expanding storage pools and the escalating costs of managing their storage systems. Hitachi Data Systems' Data Protection Services will unload a significant burden from many customers, enabling them to avoid the costs of developing and supporting in-house expertise to handle a variety of critical data-replication and data-movement projects that are technically demanding but infrequently undertaken.

The new Data Protection Services will leverage Hitachi TrueCopy™, ShadowImage™, and NanoCopy™ software as well as the powerful Hitachi Freedom Storage™ Lightning 9900™ Series systems. In contrast to similar software from other vendors, Hitachi's software runs within Hitachi's storage systems, rather than on servers. This gives customers the opportunity to continue running business applications on their servers without disruption, even while a large-scale data-protection or data migration operation is taking place.

For some customers, purchasing a service based on a high-speed data-replication function built into Hitachi Freedom Storage systems will be an economical solution to the problem of maintaining 24 x 7 operations even as they move their data centers from one location to another.

Hitachi TrueCopy Software Gives Freedom of Choice in Meeting User Requirements

Hitachi TrueCopy software provides functions for replicating data in real-time from one Lightning 9900 system to another located within a data center or across the continent. Hitachi TrueCopy software operates in either synchronous or asynchronous mode and is available for UNIX®-, Novell NetWare, Linux, WindowsNT®, and Windows® 2000-based open-systems environments, as well as S/390® environments.

For highly automated disaster recovery programs, NanoCopy software can be deployed along with Hitachi TrueCopy. With an internal time-stamping capability, NanoCopy is the only software in the industry that can assure customers that their replicated data will be totally consistent with the original data when it is recovered at a distant location following an outage. In addition, it is the only remote copy solution that provides disaster protection without any disruption of the user's on-going information technology applications.

Hitachi ShadowImage software provides instant snapshots of data within a Lightning 9900 storage system. Because the software does not disrupt normal operations and can provide up to 10 point-in-time copies, users have the option of concurrently using multiple copies for such applications as data mining, data backup, applications development and testing, or in conjunction with Hitachi TrueCopy for long-distance disaster recovery implementations.
