SANPoint Control™ Version 2.0 Adds Support for Hitachi
Freedom Storage™ to Address Time-to-Capacity and Storage Security
SANTA CLARA, CA, 13 March, 2001 — Hitachi Data Systems today announced it is building on the integration of its Hitachi Freedom Storage™ systems with VERITAS SANPoint Control™ software by including support for the latest release, Version 2.0, making it easier for users to manage these systems in complex, heterogeneous Storage Area Networks (SANs).
Today's announcement by VERITAS of increased capability for VERITAS SANPoint Control software is one of the first examples of joint development resulting from the Global Storage Management Agreement (GSMA) signed by Hitachi, Ltd., Hitachi Data Systems, and VERITAS Software Corporation in February
"Working in tandem with VERITAS, we will continue to develop and expand the interoperability of our storage systems with VERITAS software," said Dr. Jun Naruse, Hitachi Data Systems CEO. "The result will be greater simplicity and lower costs for customers who need our support in managing their rapidly expanding volumes of data."
Among the variety of enhancements introduced today in VERITAS SANPoint Control Version 2.0 are features that increase the security of data housed in Hitachi's enterprise-class storage system, the Hitachi Freedom Storage Lightning 9900™. SAN administrators can now use VERITAS SANPoint Control from a centralized user interface to control "LUN masking" operations on individual Lightning 9900 systems attached to a SAN. LUN masking locks out all but authorized users from accessing data stored on specified logical units within the disk array. The Lightning 9900 had previously been integrated with earlier versions of SANPoint Control for discovery and visualization within the VERITAS SANPoint Control Console.
Hitachi Data Systems also stated that its powerful new mid-range storage system, the Hitachi Freedom Storage Thunder 9200™, has been qualified to operate in SANs managed with SANPoint Control Version 2.0. The Thunder 9200, which has been generally available only since mid-February, is shipped ready for attachment to SANs or for use as Network Attached Storage (NAS). Version 2.0 software is capable of recognizing the presence of Thunder 9200 systems in a SAN, making it possible for customers to launch these systems from a single user interface within the SAN.
"Hitachi and VERITAS Software continue to join forces, delivering a standards-based solution that demonstrates a commitment to both our SAN partners and customers alike," said Fred van den Bosch, executive vice president, Product Operations, VERITAS Software. "Working with Hitachi under the Global Storage Management Agreement has made it possible to simplify the management of multiple SAN devices including open storage systems such as Hitachi Freedom Storage solutions using VERITAS SANPoint Control."
Besides working cooperatively with VERITAS Software on product development, Hitachi Data Systems will also resell SANPoint Control Version 2.0 to its customers.
