HDS Launches Freedom Storage Lightning 9900, Model 9910

Delivers Enterprise-Class Capability and Reliability in Smaller Package

SANTA CLARA, CA, 28 November 2000 — Continuing to set the standard for the world's most advanced enterprise storage systems, Hitachi Data Systems, a wholly owned subsidiary of Hitachi, Ltd. (NYSE:HIT), today announced Freedom Storage™ Lightning 9900™ Series, Model 9910, which joins the Model 9960 introduced this past June. Both are part of a new generation of intelligent storage systems based on Hi-Star™, a revolutionary internal switched-network architecture.

Building on the powerful hardware platform and software suite of the Lightning 9900 Series, the new model 9910 is designed to meet the information storage needs of mid-sized businesses, or divisions of large enterprises that require the highest availability and reliability of a storage system without the cost or floor space of larger systems. While the 9960 provides virtually unlimited scaling capacity to support business information of the enterprise's largest applications, the 9910's smaller capacity and footprint provides the ideal storage solution for single-application environments such as data marts — as well as support distributed strategies for remote data sharing, application testing, data replication, and disaster recovery.

"With millions of dollars at risk in this era of around-the-clock, eBusiness, companies of all sizes require high performance storage solutions," said Dave Roberson, chief operating officer, Hitachi Data Systems. "We are the company that other companies can bank on — whether a large enterprise or small to medium-sized business, we have the most reliable, powerful solutions in the industry. IT managers can rest easy, knowing their business-critical data is safe, even through a wide variety of disruptive events." The 9910 offers a maximum raw capacity of 3.5 terabytes (TB) housed in a single cabinet. This contrasts with the previously announced 9960's maximum raw capacity of 37 TB housed in six cabinets. Hitachi's 73 gigabyte (GB) disk drives are available for use with both models.

"The new 9910 storage system extends the Lightning product line by offering a more compact package for customers looking for the reliability and performance of an enterprise system, but not needing the massive capacity of the largest systems," said Steve Howe, vice president, Sales and Marketing, Datalink. "As a leading provider of information storage architectures, we look forward to offering our customers a wider variety of storage solutions from Hitachi Data Systems. The company clearly has a reputation for delivering the highest scalability, performance and availability of all comparable enterprise storage suppliers."
