Corporate Data Centers, Integrators and Service Providers Will Benefit from Advanced Storage Networking Capabilities
26th June 2000 — Hitachi Data Systems, a wholly owned subsidiary of Hitachi, Ltd. (NYSE:HIT), and privately held Troika Networks, Inc. (TROIKA™ ) today announced an alliance aimed at integrating the TROIKA Zentai™ Controller into server and storage network solutions based on Hitachi Freedom Storageä products and services.
The Zentai Controller is an intelligent interface linking network servers with each other and with the switching fabric of Storage Area Networks (SANs). TROIKA technology creates a single-wire network for multi-protocol data movement, delivering ultra-high performance for end-user applications. It also enables a significant reduction in network complexity and cabling, leading to lower installation and data management costs.
Both companies this week begin a series of informational seminars for customers across the United States. As part of a "road show" to launch a new Hitachi Data Systems storage product, they are jointly demonstrating the benefits of the Zentai Controller in a data-mining application. With a large database spread across a cluster of Windows NT® servers, the system is able to scan the database six to eight times faster than conventional system configurations. The Zentai Controller technology provides an unprecedented reduction — as much as 25 to 1 — in the processing effort that must be devoted to data-movement tasks. As a result, a much larger percentage of server resources can be used for application computing to get increased business value from the data.
The SAN used in this demonstration incorporates the Hitachi Freedom Storage Lightning 9900™ system, also announced today. Based on Hi-Star®, a revolutionary new internal switched fabric architecture, the Lightning 9900 can be scaled up to 37 terabytes of storage capacity — twice the size of any other subsystem — without experiencing any deterioration in performance.
"Working with TROIKA, Hitachi Data Systems is able to show customers how to obtain the flexibility they need to build a scalable IT infrastructure. They can consolidate and optimize their storage networks with server networks to adapt to unanticipated needs," said Hu Yoshida, Hitachi Data Systems Vice President of Data Networking Solutions. "Our advanced storage networking technology dramatically increases our customers' return on investment by creating a single network to access and manage data."
Brenda Christensen, TROIKA Vice President of Marketing said, "HDS' products and expertise for departmental and data center solutions, coupled with TROIKA Zentai technology, create powerful solutions for demanding environments. TROIKA Zentai controllers support scalable storage networks and offer new methods of standards-based, high-performance clustering for e-business applications. The TROIKA Zentai offering includes such advanced services as dynamic multi-pathing and multi-protocol support for the Virtual Interface (VI) Architecture, Internet Protocol (IP) and SCSI on Fibre Channel."
Troika Networks, Inc. (TROIKA™ ) brings new dimensions to Storage Networks by adding server cluster and IP communications to storage-protocol-only SANs. This multi-dimensional network is the foundation of a highly available, scalable and reliable IT infrastructure for business critical applications. TROIKA's products are based on open standard Fibre Channel technology, and provide advanced Quality of Service and manageability features.
