Hitachi Pilot Servers Achieve Industry Leading Performance; Pilot P9 Delivers 60,000 I/Os per Second in Recent Benchmark

Transaction Processing Facility (TPF) customer results substantiate recent Hitachi benchmark

23 November 1999 Hitachi Data Systems today unveiled new benchmark test results that demonstrate the performance advantages of the Hitachi Pilot P8 and P9 Series over all other CMOS-based mainframes running in System/390® commercial environments. In one of the tests, a fully configured Pilot P9, with its superior input/output (I/O) subsystem design, ultra-fast I/O engines, large internal bandwidth, and faster memory subsystem, solidified Hitachi's position as the industry leader by delivering the fastest throughput of any CMOS processor available today.

In single-image mode, a Hitachi Pilot P9 server running industry standard commercial OS/390® workloads (such as CICS®, DB2®, IMS®, TSO, and batch workloads) outperformed the competition by achieving a sustained I/O rate of 59,026 I/Os per second. The results were obtained by running a complete set of tests on a Hitachi Pilot P9 and then re-running the same tests on competitor's products, using equivalent configurations and workloads.

Superior performance results have been consistently validated in customer environments. In a large TPF customer environment, a Pilot P8 server achieved nine percent more transaction throughput over the closest competitors in a like configuration, and delivered a 40 percent reduction in I/O response time.

TPF, a real-time mainframe operating system widely used by major airlines for their reservation and flight planning systems, supports intensive transaction environments requiring extremely high I/O rates and message switching.

Because the Pilot's Channel Redrive feature eliminates the need for the Input/Output Processor (IOP) to redrive I/O's, Hitachi Data Systems' customers have experienced much higher I/O rates in TPF environments. These TPF customer experiences with Hitachi Pilot Series™ CMOS servers confirm Hitachi's unparalleled reputation for superior performance, availability, capacity, and scalability.

"Our benchmark results and customer data reflect Hitachi's dedication to improving customer application throughput by delivering superior systems, subsystems, and components," said Alan Cade, vice president and general manager, Hitachi Data Systems Enterprise Server Business Unit. "We are committed to providing the highest level of technology necessary for handling large transaction volumes, and giving our customers a competitive edge in today's aggressive business market."

The benchmark results announced today clearly demonstrate that in similar, high I/O tests, the Hitachi Pilot P8 and P9 Series outperform all other industry standard large CMOS servers.
