Hitachi Data Systems, VERITAS Software Expand Alliance to Reduce Cost of Managing SAN Installations

Hitachi to collaborate with VERITAS Software on integration testing, supports development of new SAN virtualization technologies.

04 November 1999 — Hitachi Data Systems today announced that it has expanded its relationship with VERITAS® Software Corporation (NASDAQ: VRTS) by supporting two VERITAS Software storage area network (SAN) initiatives, including its new SAN Integration LAB (iLAB) and VERITAS V3 SAN virtualization technologies. The joint collaboration will help to ensure that customers receive fully tested, best-in-class SAN solutions from both companies.

With technologies changing constantly in the emerging SAN environment, customers need effective ways to reduce the risks of SAN implementations. VERITAS Software's new iLAB tests various platforms and configurations, allowing customers to deploy now, and realize up front the benefits of SAN solutions in heterogeneous configurations. Hitachi will work closely with systems-integration testing of VERITAS Software solutions using Hitachi Freedom SAN™ offerings in VERITAS Software's iLAB.

"Our strengthened alliance with VERITAS Software is complementary to our SAN offerings and ensures that we can deliver on what our customers require for their evolving SAN environments," said Richard Search, Vice President, Hitachi Data Systems Storage Marketing. "By offering industry-leading, open SAN solutions, which include selected alliance partners such as VERITAS Software, customers will receive pre-tested solutions for solving business issues while protecting their SAN investments."

In line with Hitachi's strategy to reduce the total cost of SAN ownership, VERITAS Software's V3 virtualization initiative focuses on reducing the cost and complexity involved with administrating SAN resources. VERITAS Software's V3 technologies provide a common application program interface (API) for communicating with Fibre Channel networking products and storage devices, discovering SAN devices and services, and managing physical storage through logical abstraction.

"Hitachi Data Systems' commitment to multivendor, non-proprietary SAN solutions puts them in a leadership position to provide complete flexibility to customers for creating the SAN environment that meets their specific business needs," said Steve Colman, Vice President of worldwide OEM operations, VERITAS Software. "Our latest SAN initiatives fit well with Hitachi Freedom SAN solutions and will ultimately allow our customers to fully maximize the latest SAN technologies and reduce the overall cost of ownership."

Hitachi resells VERITAS Software's flagship storage management software, VERITAS Foundation Suite™, with its Hitachi Freedom Storage™ 5700, 5800, and 7700E solutions. The suite consists of VERITAS Volume Manager™ and VERITAS File System™, which optimize performance, provide higher levels of data availability, and reduce administrative costs. VERITAS Volume Manager is an on-line disk and storage management tool for enterprise computing environments. VERITAS File System is a mainframe-class, journaling file system that facilitates high performance, quick recovery, and easy scalability.

Hitachi's Freedom SAN solutions are based on Hitachi's Freedom Data Networks™ architecture, which allows data-access and data-sharing capabilities to be deployed across the enterprise. Hitachi's professional services organization provides a wide range of services to design and implement these complex SAN environments, allowing Hitachi to deliver a total SAN solution tailored to each customer's specific needs. Hitachi's own Interoperability Lab (I-Lab) tests all Freedom SAN components to ensure interoperability — providing a quick way to tailor designs for meeting customer requirements in many business environments.
