Hitachi Data Systems customers to benefit from greater flexibility and ease-of-administration in managing high-end enterprise software licenses.
18 October 1999 — Computer Associates International, Inc. (CA) and Hitachi Data Systems today announced that CA will provide extended support for Hitachi's Virtual Server Facility (VSF™) by incorporating VSF-capable mainframe processing platforms from Hitachi Data Systems and its distributors into its Millennium License Program for all CA products running on OS/390.®
The incorporation of VSF-based servers in the Millennium Licensing Program will provide Hitachi customers with the ability to more easily manage their enterprise software licensing administration process.
CA's Millennium License for CA products running on IBM's OS/390 enables CA clients to establish special Millennium rights and annual maintenance terms, including upgrades and 24 x 7 technical support. It is available for all combinations of CA solutions for the OS/390 environment. Key benefits include a fixed maintenance cap, configuration flexibility, and reduced support fees for customers.
"We're pleased to extend the advantages of CA's new Millennium Licensing Program to our clients deploying Hitachi's mission-critical enterprise servers," said CA President and Chief Operating Officer Sanjay Kumar. "This licensing arrangement provides an excellent opportunity for Hitachi customers to optimize their IT investments through more effective applications administration, further enhancing their ability to meet today's business challenges."
Commenting on this announcement, Yoshihiro Koshimizu, Chairman and CEO of Hitachi Data Systems, said, "Hitachi Data Systems welcomes CA's support in helping customers find more efficient ways to manage their software assets. By incorporating Skyline Trinium™ enterprise servers in the Millennium Licensing Program, CA is proving its commitment to our customers, helping them more fully exploit the strengths and resources of the Hitachi/CA partnership."
The inclusion of Hitachi Skyline Trinium and Pilot Series™ enterprise servers into the Millennium Licensing Program is the latest of several recent initiatives by Hitachi and CA. To further illustrate the level of cooperation between the two companies, CA has been given software access to select operations-critical information available only on Hitachi Skyline Trinium, Skyline, and Pilot Series processors, reducing complexity and easing systems management. This unique capability will be included in CA's Unicenter TNG® Framework™ for OS/390 software offering, which will ship with every Skyline Trinium.
Hitachi's VSF helps companies more efficiently manage their software assets by allowing users to be charged based on the number of processors used by each licensed software product, rather than the system's overall capacity. VSF enables clients to work with their ISVs in finding the optimal solution for software management.
Utilizing Physical Instruction Processor Isolation Technology, VSF enables clients to set precise boundaries with each processor and assign model identifiers, defining up to 15 discrete Virtual Servers within a single footprint.
Users can employ one Virtual Server as a data warehouse, another as a World Wide Web server, another to facilitate electronic transaction processing, and another for data mining or Customer Relationship Management (CRM) applications.
