Hitachi teams with ISM to provide PerfMan Service for OS/390 on all Hitachi Skyline Trinium and Pilot Series mainframes.
Integrated business solution helps DMdata manage 9,000 plus MIPS enterprise environment.
12 October 1999 — In line with its strategy to make enterprise simplicity the core of its business plans, Hitachi Data Systems and The Information Systems Manager, Inc. (ISM™) announced that all new Hitachi Data Systems Skyline Trinium™ and Pilot Series™ mainframe processing platforms worldwide will ship with ISM's PerfMan® Services for OS/390,® providing clients with a centralized, integrated means of managing enterprise-wide capacity, performance, and system planning information.
Commenting on the announcement, Morten Lovschall, Chief Planner of DMdata said, "For Scandinavia's largest facility management company with more than 9,000 MIPS, it is crucial to improve the overall management of our S/390® environment. ISM's PerfMan tools provide us with the flexibility, efficiency, and ease of use across various customer platforms without the hassle we used to have with other tools. Hitachi and ISM have provided DMdata with a true business solution that helps us gain better control of our workload, performance, and capacity management."
With ISM PerfMan tools, users can drastically reduce the amount of time reviewing OS/390 performance data, and gain control of workload and performance management, capacity planning, storage management, and cache analysis. PerfMan's intuitive graphical user interface gives businesses centralized access to enterprise-wide performance information, and lets users complete any combination of PerfMan functions in one session.
"ISM's PerfMan Services for OS/390 has enabled us to better manage our business-critical workloads on our Hitachi mainframes and focus our I/O tuning efforts where they are most needed," said Jim Chorosevic, General Manager and Chief Technology Officer for Ryerson Tull, one of the world's leading metals distributors. "Hitachi and ISM have provided Ryerson Tull with an advanced business solution that helps us reduce overall costs normally associated with performance tuning for our mainframe and distributed environments."
The PerfMan Service for OS/390 delivers a unique blend of sophisticated analysis in a presentation format that can be used by executives and technicians alike. The PerfMan Service provides two deliverables on a monthly basis; two books of color graphic reports, as well as a monthly update to a historical database for detailed trending and "what-if" analysis with PerfMan's PC-based software, provided with the service and tailored to clients' specific needs.
This unique feature frees up users' capacity and performance staff from the tedious task of generating monthly reports. Moreover, the combination of hardcopy reporting and drill-down analysis software furnishes the information that IT management and technicians need to improve tactical and strategic decision-making.
Chris Worrall, Vice President of Server Product Management at Hitachi Data Systems, said, "Complexity is inherent in every segment of large enterprises, from the software, the hardware, the employees, the connectivity issues, and the overall business infrastructure. It is the invisible multiplier of risk. In other words, complexity is not only the principle component of risk, it is also a primary component of cost — two key areas that ISM's PerfMan Service for OS/390 excels in addressing.
"Together, Hitachi's enterprise servers and ISM's PerfMan Service will allow clients to make significant changes in their operation, increase flexibility and asset utilization, and substantially reduce costs and complexity throughout the enterprise."
Lou Mickley, Director of Worldwide Sales Support at ISM said, "Partnering globally with Hitachi Data Systems to bring their customers innovative business solutions and services has been beneficial for all parties involved. Together, we've enabled clients to obtain a competitive advantage through optimization of their technology investments in complex multi-platform environments."
Underscoring the value of trend analysis, each Trinium/Pilot/PerfMan offering will be initiated by the loading and processing of up to 12 months' historical data, providing immediate and recognizable value to the system planning and capacity projection process. Each license for PerfMan's OS/390 Management Suite includes the following:
OS/390 Performance Management — profiles current and historical resource utilization, system performance, and workload-level indicators.
OS/390 Advanced Workload Management — takes analysis of workload groups to a new level of ease and sophistication
OS/390 Capacity Planning — allows for effective forecasting of future requirements
Correlation Analysis — identifies how your system metrics interact with each other, and aids in predicting future performance
OS/390 Advanced DASD Management — focuses I/O tuning efforts where they are most needed
OS/390 DASD Cache Analysis — enables businesses to manage cache memory and optimize its use
Briefing Book Facility — provides high-level communication of key performance information. Metrics published on companies' Intranets can be updated daily.
In addition, ISM recently announced support of Hitachi's Virtual Server Facility (VSF™) — available only on Hitachi Skyline Trinium, Pilot P9, and P8 systems. VSF helps customers more efficiently manage their software assets by enabling users to be charged based on the number of processors used by each licensed software product, rather than the system's overall capacity. Hitachi Data Systems is also an authorized reseller of the complete suite of PerfMan software for Windows NT, Unix,® DB2,® and CICS® environments.
