Network-accessible solution supports heterogeneous enterprises.
Hitachi TAS is key element of forthcoming Hitachi virtual information technology infrastructure.
29 September 1999 — Demonstrating its leadership in providing S/390®-based business solutions, Hitachi Data Systems today announced Hitachi TotalNET Advanced Server (Hitachi TAS) for the OS/390® environment. Highly scalable and manageable for heterogeneous enterprises, Hitachi TAS delivers network accessible storage of mission-critical data for desktop users, without any changes to existing Windows NT and Windows 95/98 workstations.
Relying on S/390 servers, Hitachi TAS allows the seamless transfer of files between the desktop and the mainframe, using native Windows functions, without additional software requirements. With user and server data residing inside, Hitachi TAS uses a Web-enabled interface to alleviate storage administration tasks and provide mainframe-quality data availability and management across heterogeneous network and desktop environments.
"Hitachi's intent in modifying TAS for OS/390 was to impart ease and accessibility for desktop users, and assist in proactive management of server, storage, and network components of the enterprise," said Jeff Edwards, Group Vice President, Enterprise Solutions, Hitachi Data Systems. "This solution leverages the industrial strength of S/390 servers to address primary storage needs, and will be a key component of a new virtual information technology infrastructure that Hitachi Data Systems plans to announce over the coming months."
Through the extreme availability of OS/390 environments, Hitachi TAS enables continuous access to mission-critical data, while providing a consistent backup strategy for users. The Hitachi TAS solution is an integral piece of a larger initiative that Hitachi Data Systems will unveil later this year, which ties together the concepts of e-business, application hosting, and storage area networks (SANs).
Hitachi TAS is scheduled to be generally available in November. Hitachi plans to leverage its technology partnerships to deliver unique S/390-compatible server and storage solutions that will offer usage-based pricing, similar to that commonly found in the utilities industry.
