Bridgestone Corporation Selects Two Hitachi Visionbase Eight-way NT Servers to Power Its SAP R/3 Implementation

Bridgestone chooses the industry's first Intel Profusion™-based eight-way server for its mainframe reliability and boundless scalability.

Two Hitachi eight-way servers, six Hitachi four-way servers, and a Hitachi Freedom Storage 5800 subsystem serve as the core Bridgestone architecture.

23 August, 1999 — Hitachi Data Systems today announced that Bridgestone Corporation, the worlds largest manufacturer of tires and other rubber products, has implemented their SAP® R/3™ enterprise business solution using Hitachi VisionBase™ 8880R eight-way and VisionBase 8450 four-way servers.

Two Hitachi VisionBase 8880R Intel® Pentium® III Xeon™-powered Windows NT® servers function as critical database servers with Microsoft SQL® 7.0 for Bridgestone's R/3 solution. Additionally, six Hitachi VisionBase 8450 four-way servers are used as application servers in conjunction with a Hitachi Freedom Storage™ 5800 subsystem.

The R/3 implementation at Bridgestone supports a peak of 1,000 concurrent users and includes the following applications: SAP Financial Accounting (FI), Managerial Accounting (CO), Fixed Assets Management (FI-AA), Inventory/Purchasing Management (MM), Traveling Expenses Management (HR-TRV), and Treasury-Capital Management (TR-CM).

"Bridgestone has been using Hitachi's Intel-based servers in a wide variety of environments for a number of years and is very impressed with their performance and resiliency," said Masakatsu Saeki, Manager of Bridgestone's Information Systems Division. "Before implementing the latest ERP project, using the new eight-processor servers in our data center, much thought was given to the reliability issue.

"Considering that Hitachi has a legacy built around high quality, reliable products, we decided to implement two of the company's VisionBase 8880Rs. The servers have been running flawlessly since installation, and have ensured continuous availability throughout the enterprise. Hitachi's 8880Rs have provided a significant boost in throughput in this implementation for Bridgestone."

Key to the Bridgestone project was reducing the cost/performance factor for their information processing environment by 50 percent, yet maintaining the high reliability and availability for their mission-critical accounting and purchasing systems. The design characteristics of the VisionBase 8880R have enabled the company to experience a computing environment equal to that of mainframes. Featuring a robust system design, the VisionBase 8880R has precise signal timing and thermal chassis construction.

"Hitachi's 8880Rs have been up and running at numerous customer sites for several months now, and all our customers recognize a significant boost in performance from their previous four-way systems," said Michael Krieger, Vice President of NT Server Marketing, Hitachi Data Systems. "As a result, Hitachi has unsurpassed experience in solving customer problems and creating new business applications when it comes to eight-way servers. Hitachi's Profusion-based eight-way is a proven system."

The VisionBase 8880R is available immediately in the Americas, and can be purchased through Hitachi Data Systems' value-added resellers (VARs) — with selected configure-to-order options — and is fully backed by Hitachi Data Systems' service and support. As part of the service and warranty program, Hitachi Data Systems provides toll-free, 24 by 7 customer support at 1-800-776-6747 or via email at support@hds.com. Hitachi Data Systems' PC server management software — Hitachi Systems Manager — contains a predictive failure analysis component that will allow users, VARs, or their support organizations to order repair components or dispatch a service technician before a problem causes any "hard" errors.
