Hitachi Data Systems Introduces New Visionbase Servers Powered by Intel's Latest Pentium III Xeon Technology

23 August, 1999 — Hitachi Data Systems today announced performance upgrades to its entire VisionBase™ server lineup. All Hitachi VisionBase servers are orderable now and available for delivery in September with Intel Pentium® III Xeon™ 550MHz or Pentium III 550MHz processors.

The new Hitachi VisionBase server lineup includes the following:
VisionBase 8890R

The new VisionBase 8890R is the industrys only next generation Intel Profusion™-based eight-way NT server, and is backed by Hitachis unparalleled experience in eight-way server implementations worldwide. The VisionBase 8890R provides mainframe-class reliability, and is designed to help companies excel in the e-business era. Available with up to eight Intel Pentium III Xeon 550MHz processors with up to 2MB of Level 2 cache per processor, the VisionBase 8890R features 32GB of 100MHz error checking and correcting (ECC) SDRAM, six hot-swap disk bays, and 12 64-bit, 66MHz PCI expansion slots — 10 of which are hot plug capable.

VisionBase 8880R

The VisionBase 8880R features the industry's first Profusion-based eight-way architecture. In an Internet environment, it can sustain over 4 million Web hits per month and over 6,000 visitors per day. It is available with up to eight Intel Pentium III Xeon processors with up to 2MB of Level-2 cache per processor, and up to 32GB of error checking and correcting (ECC) SDRAM. Its CPU, memory, disk drives, I/O, and network subsystems options are fully upgradeable.

VisionBase 8460

The VisionBase 8460 is the most powerful of Hitachi's mid-range servers, featuring up to four Intel Pentium III Xeon 550MHz processors with up to 2MB of Level 2 cache per processor, 8GB of error checking and correcting (ECC) EDO memory, four 64-bit PCI slots, seven 32-bit PCI slots, with up to 12 hot-swap disk bays. The VisionBase 8460 is one of the best business choices for decision support solutions, clustering, and on-line transaction processing, and is available only as a rack-mountable model.

VisionBase 8455/8450

The VisionBase 8455 & 8450 are Hitachi's mid-range, four-way servers, ideal for clustering, application development, and larger database applications. The VisionBase mid-range servers can be configured with up to four Intel Pentium III Xeon 550MHz processors with up to 1MB of Level 2 cache per processor, up to 4GB of error checking and correcting (ECC) EDO memory, six hot plug disk bays, and seven PCI slots. The VisionBase 8455 is available in either tower or rack models.

VisionBase 8245/8240

The VisionBase 8245 & 8240 are entry-level servers designed to handle workgroups, small business applications, departmental, file, print, and replicated network needs. The VisionBase 8245 & 8240 can be configured with one or two Intel Pentium III 550MHz processors with 512KB of Level 2 cache per processor, up to 1GB of error checking and correcting (ECC) SDRAM, and six PCI slots.

Intel Pentium III Xeon processors provide several advanced business-enabling features to the Hitachi VisionBase lineup that will aid companies in a multitude of critical enterprise environments.

New Intel Pentium III Xeon processor enterprise features are:

A new System Management Bus (SMBus) that ensures a seamless interface to platform level hardware/software (HW/SW) manageability

Thermal Sensing Devices which provide processor operating condition information to prevent system failures and ensure data integrity and reliability

Extended Server Memory Architecture (ESMA) that provides large memory size (up to 64GB) to enhance performance particularly in memory-intensive applications

Full speed L2 cache bus and large L2 cache size, ensuring one common platform that can be configured to meet a variety of performance and application needs

Scalability for 4-way and greater multiprocessing
