Isogon Addresses Asset Management Software Savings with Hitachi Data Systems' Virtual Server Facility

Isogon will introduce server-based pricing for Hitachi's VSF-defined servers.

16 August 1999 — Isogon Corporation and Hitachi Data Systems today announced that Isogon, the leading developer and vendor of IT asset management software for enterprise systems, will support VSF™-capable mainframe processing platforms from Hitachi Data Systems and its distributors. Isogon will extend pricing for its OS/390®-based asset management products to support Hitachi's Virtual Server Facility (VSF) model, which enables users to be charged based on the processors used by each licensed software product, rather than the system's overall capacity.

VSF — available on Hitachi Skyline Trinium,™ Pilot P9 Series, and P8 systems — is designed to aid customers in software asset management through its capability of setting precise boundaries within each processor and assigning unique serial numbers and model identifiers. Utilizing Instruction Processor (IP) Isolation Technology, VSF allows the definition of up to 15 discrete Virtual Servers within a single footprint. This enables Hitachi Data Systems to configure each Virtual Server specifically for the number of instruction processors being used for a particular software application, thereby allowing separate ISV contracts for users.

"Isogon joins a number of leading software vendors in supporting Hitachi's Virtual Server Facility," said Alan Cade, Vice President and General Manager, Hitachi Data Systems Enterprise Servers. "This will allow Hitachi Data Systems and Isogon to offer customers increased flexibility in their OS/390 environment. VSF is yet another example of Hitachi's commitment to helping customers achieve the best return on investment for their technology dollars."

"An important part of Isogon's mission is to foster a strong awareness of the business benefits of software asset management," said Robert Barritz, President of Isogon Corporation. "We're committed to supporting technology programs, such as those offered by Hitachi's VSF, that address and facilitate the practice of asset management in its offerings."

The Virtual Server environment can be configured according to the number of instruction processors required for the designated workload, thereby allowing users to isolate specific software applications on server boundaries. Users can employ one Virtual Server as a data warehouse, another as a World Wide Web server, another to facilitate Online Transaction Processing (OLTP), and another for Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) applications.

"Hitachi's Skyline Trinium VSF facilitates asset management while affording customers the operational flexibility to optimize their computing capacity in a wide range of IT environments," said Mike Zelle, Senior Product Manager of asset management products for Isogon. "Asset management will be a critical piece for any enterprise computing platform to remain viable in the new millennium.

"Our customers have asked us for licensing and pricing policies which more closely match their usage patterns. Hitachi's VSF allows our customers to license what they need, regardless of their other workloads and without the burden of trying to measure and prove actual resource usage," added Zelle.

Currently, Computer Associates International, BMC Software, ISM, Candle Corporation, Compuware, and now Isogon have endorsed VSF, providing software asset management flexibility to common clients.
