CityofBoston.com now sustains more than 6,000 visitors per day.
Hitachi's VisionBase 8880R is the only Profusion™-based eight-way server currently shipping in volume.
28 July 1999 — Hitachi Data Systems today announced that the CityofBoston.com Web site is leveraging its Hitachi VisionBase™ 8880R to sustain nearly 4 million hits per month, and more than 6,000 visitors per day — a substantial 20 percent increase from just two months ago.
"The architecture built into this machine is simply incredible," said W. Todd Sims, Director of Information Technology for the City of Boston. "With its built-in system redundancy and surge protection, the VisionBase 8880R is designed to never fail and provides us with high availability, scorching performance, and the power to take us to the next level. We actually call it `Hercules' because it can handle anything we throw at it."
Since installing the VisionBase 8880R in December of last year, the thriving transaction-oriented Web site has used the server as its e-business engine of choice, processing several hundred thousand dollars worth of transactions in the past few months. Currently, the VisionBase 8880R provides the vital horsepower required to allow Boston residents to pay all vehicle excise taxes and parking tickets online.
"What many people don't understand is that when you actually perform an online transaction, your server is reading and writing from and to multiple databases and processing an infinite amount of data just to complete one online sale. In other words, you need a serious box to do a great deal of work," said Kyle Tager, Manager of Online Services for the City of Boston. "With the Hitachi VisionBase eight-way server, we have a precision engineered server capable of handling unpredictable transaction volumes and mixed workloads on a 24 by 7 by 365 worldwide basis."
Since April 1, 1999, over 3,200 vehicle excise tax transactions have been processed online. Transactions such as property tax payments and animal license payments will be available in the fall. In addition, the City of Boston is currently developing a translation server that will enable the entire Web site to run in Spanish. Like all other mission-critical applications for the City of Boston, the translation processing will be managed by the VisionBase 8880R.
"As companies are moving their businesses online, they are looking at Hitachi eight-way servers for the performance they need today, and we can deliver it today," said Michael Krieger, Vice President of NT Server Marketing, Hitachi Data Systems. "If your business is experiencing exponential online growth and you need the fastest, most reliable server and storage solutions to increase your business throughput, Hitachi Data Systems has next generation solutions that address your demanding IT needs today."
The Hitachi VisionBase 8880R is ideal for large back office applications, as a dedicated Web server for complex online processing, server consolidation, back-office database manipulation, data warehousing and data mining applications, and infrastructure applications such as Microsoft Exchange groupware and messaging software.
Intel® Pentium® III Xeon™ 550MHz versions of the 8880R will be available in late summer. In addition, Hitachi is working with Intel on forthcoming solutions for IA-64 processors, and is also a founding member of the next generation I/O architecture committee.
The VisionBase 8880R is available immediately in the Americas, with availability in Europe and Asia Pacific slated for later this year. VisionBase servers are available through Hitachi Data Systems' value-added resellers (VARs) — with selected configure-to-order options — and are fully backed by Hitachi Data Systems' service and support. As part of the service and warranty program, Hitachi Data Systems provides toll-free, 24 by 7 customer support at 1-800-776-6747 or via email. Hitachi Data Systems' server management software contains a predictive failure analysis component that will allow users, VARs, or their support organizations to order repair components or dispatch a service technician before a problem causes any "hard" errors.
