Hitachi Data Systems Teams With Compuware to Provide Asset Management Flexibility on OS/390® Products

Hitachi Data Systems' Virtual Server Facility enables users to more closely define actual capacity requirements for applications.

22 June 1999 — Hitachi Data Systems today announced that Compuware Corporation will support Virtual Server Facility (VSF™)-capable mainframe processing platforms from Hitachi Data Systems and its distributors by offering licensing and pricing options based on capacity for VSF-defined servers. Compuware's support of VSF-defined servers will cover Compuware OS/390®-based product offerings to be deployed on VSF-capable systems.

VSF - available on Hitachi Skyline Trinium,™ Pilot P9, and P8 systems - helps customers more efficiently manage their software assets by allowing them to set definite boundaries within the processor and assign unique serial numbers and model identifiers. Using Instruction Processor (IP) Isolation Technology, VSF allows up to 15 discrete Virtual Servers within a single footprint.

Customers instruct Hitachi Data Systems to configure the virtual server environment according to the number of instruction processors required for the designated workload, thereby allowing users to isolate specific software applications on server boundaries. Users can employ one Virtual Server as a data warehouse, another as a World Wide Web server, another to facilitate Online Transaction Processing (OLTP), and another for Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) applications.

"The combination of Hitachi's VSF and Compuware's OS/390 products increases the range of flexibility that customers can use in their software configuration environments," said Alan Cade, vice president and general manager, Hitachi Data Systems Enterprise Servers. "We are delighted to team with Compuware to provide our mutual customers with powerful tools to manage their software assets."

"Compuware is committed to offering licensing and pricing options that best reflect value derived from our industry-leading line of OS/390 products," said Hank Jallos, executive vice president, Compuware Products Division. "Our support of the VSF technology demonstrates this by allowing users the flexibility to leverage their computing capacity requirements. It also demonstrates Compuware's support for users considering new workload application growth, and growth relating to the demands of e-commerce applications."
