Hitachi Data Systems' Virtual Server Facility (VSF) provides server configuration options and enables software to be charged per virtual server.
May 17 1999 — Hitachi Data Systems, a leading provider of business solutions for the world's most IT-intensive corporations, and Candle Corporation, the leading provider of Solutions for Networked Businesses™, today announced that Candle will support the recently announced P9 Pilot Series™, as well as the Pilot P8, Skyline Trinium™, and all other VSF™-capable mainframe processing platforms from Hitachi Data Systems and its distributors, by introducing server-based pricing for VSF-defined servers.
Candle's support of VSF-defined servers began on March 26, 1999 and will cover all Candle OS/390-based products running on an individual server. VSF is designed to aid customers in software asset management through its capability of setting hard boundaries within the processor and assigning unique serial numbers and model identifiers. Utilizing Instruction Processor (IP) Isolation Technology, VSF allows the definition of up to 15 discrete Virtual Servers within a single footprint. This enables Hitachi Data Systems to configure each Virtual Server specifically for the number of nodes being used for a particular software application, thereby allowing separate ISV contracts for users.
Candle has taken a leadership role in introducing flexible pricing options to meet the needs of customers. Recent announcements include supporting usage-based pricing models for Candle products that support CICS®, IMS™, and DB2®.
"Hitachi Data Systems and Candle are leaders in bringing licensing flexibility to the industry to help customers better leverage their hardware and OS/390 investment," said Bill Yaman, Candle's Vice President of enterprise computing and infrastructure. "This licensing support benefits our current mutual customers and those choosing Hitachi Data Systems in the future. Actively supporting Hitachi Data Systems' VSF is yet another indicator of Candle's commitment to leadership in enhanced software asset management."
"Hitachi Data Systems' Fortune 500 customers demand business solutions that allow them to make intelligent choices in today's ultra-competitive global marketplace," said Alan Cade, Vice President and General Manager, Hitachi Data Systems Enterprise Server Business Unit. "Candle's existing presence in the top markets worldwide complements Hitachi Data Systems' enterprise server lineup - offering the broadest range of choices in the industry. The integrated solution of Candle OS/390-based products on VSF will ensure our common customers the freedom to manage their software assets, low cost of ownership, and industry-leading performance built on Hitachi Data Systems' high-performance, reliable and secure components."
Currently, Computer Associates International, BMC Software, ISM, and now Candle have endorsed VSF, providing software asset management flexibility to common clients.
