HDS Expands Pricing Support for Skyline Trinium™ VSF on PerfMan® OS/390® Products

Hitachi Data Systems and ISM agree to provide software asset management flexibility to common clients.

Virtual Server Facility (VSF™) provides server configuration options and enables software to be charged per virtual server.

May 4 1999 — Hitachi Data Systems, a leading provider of business solutions for the world's most IT-intensive corporations, and The Information Systems Manager, Inc. (ISM), a recognized industry leader in innovative solutions for capacity and performance management, today announced that ISM will support the Skyline Trinium's Virtual Server Facility (VSF), by introducing server-based pricing for VSF-defined servers.

VSF is designed to aid customers in software asset management through its capability of setting hard boundaries within the processor and assigning unique serial numbers and model identifiers. Utilizing IP Isolation Technology, VSF allows the definition of up to 15 discrete Virtual Servers within a single Trinium footprint. This enables Hitachi Data Systems to configure each virtual server specifically for the number of nodes being used for a particular software application, thereby allowing separate ISV contracts for users. ISM's support of VSF-based servers began April 1, 1999 and will be available on all VSF-capable mainframe processing platforms from Hitachi Data Systems and its distributors, covering all OS/390®-based products running on an individual server.

"Hitachi Data Systems and ISM share a common vision of bringing the most flexible offerings to the industry to help customers achieve a competitive business advantage," said James M. VanArtsdalen, President & CEO, ISM. "Our agreement with Hitachi Data Systems further strengthens the industry adoption of VSF as a software asset management platform for large enterprises, and helps ISM to expand its strategic partnerships on a global level."

"VSF reflects Hitachi Data Systems' dedication to providing the tools necessary to ease the management of software assets," said Chris Worall, Vice President of Product Management, Hitachi Data Systems. "Building a smoothly functioning business in a competitive environment requires a total business solution. Together with the PerfMan for OS/390® product line, the Skyline Trinium enables our common clients to build their businesses on a reliable, flexible, and highly scalable platform that ensures both low cost of ownership and the functionality needed to remain competitive."

On February 22, 1999 Hitachi Data Systems announced Skyline Trinium, the most available and flexible high-end server in the history of the mainframe. As part of this announcement, Hitachi Data Systems also announced its Virtual Server Facility (VSF), a unique feature designed to allow users to work with their ISVs in finding the optimal solution for software management. Currently, Computer Associates International, Inc., BMC Software, and now ISM have endorsed VSF, ensuring an integrated business solution for customers.
