HDS Announces BMC Software Support for Skyline Trinium™ VSF on OS/390® Products

Hitachi Data Systems and BMC Software agree to provide asset management flexibility to common clients.

Virtual Server Facility (VSF) provides server configuration flexibility and separate server identification for ISV contracts

April 19 1999 — Hitachi Data Systems, a leading provider of business solutions for the world's most IT-intensive corporations, and BMC Software, Inc., the industry leading developer of software solutions that improve the availability, performance, and recoverability of business-critical applications, today announced that BMC Software will support the Hitachi Skyline Trinium's Virtual Server Facility (VSF), by introducing server-based pricing for VSF-defined servers.

VSF is designed to aid customers in software asset management through its capability of setting hard boundaries within the processor and assigning unique serial numbers and model identifiers. BMC Software's support of VSF-based servers began on April 1, 1999 and will cover all OS/390-based products running on an individual server.

"We are in the business of enabling our customers to get the most value out of their IT investment," said Somesh Singh, director of field planning and strategy at BMC Software. "VSF allows customers additional flexibility to leverage their computing capacity. BMC Software's products running on a VSF-defined server will be priced in the same manner as they are priced for a stand-alone server. Our industry leading Enterprise License Agreement will continue to be a very attractive offering for many customers."

"We are pleased to be working with BMC Software. The combination of the Skyline Trinium's Virtual Server Facility and BMC Software's OS/390 products is an advantage for our common customers deploying mission-critical applications in today's demanding business environments," said Cliff Stratton, executive vice president, Operations, for Hitachi Data Systems.

On February 22, 1999 Hitachi Data Systems announced Skyline Trinium, the most available and flexible high-end server in the history of the mainframe. As part of this announcement, Hitachi also announced its Virtual Server Facility (VSF), a cost-effective feature designed to allow each Virtual Server (VS) to have its own server identification for ISV contracts. VSF will allow users to work with their ISVs in finding the optimal solution for software management. Currently, Computer Associates International, Inc., and now BMC Software have endorsed VSF, ensuring an integrated business solution for customers.
