Hitachi Data Systems Reports TPC-D Benchmark Results On Powerful Data Mart for Windows NT Environments

Solution combines high-performance, high-reliability Hitachi servers and storage for industry's best price/performance rating.

February 25 1999 — Hitachi Data Systems today announced benchmark testing results on a data mart configuration delivering three times the performance at less than one-seventh the cost of the closest reported results for systems in the same category.

The system tested by Hitachi Data Systems is based on its AD450NX NT Server with IBM DB2 Universal Database running Windows NT. In the TPC-D benchmark tests described today, queries were directed to a 30-gigabyte database stored in a Hitachi Freedom Storage™ 5800 subsystem. The storage was attached to the server via high-speed Fibre Channel connections. Data marts storing up to 30 gigabytes of business information represent the fastest-growing segment of the business intelligence arena.

"Today's announcement demonstrates that Hitachi's Pentium-based AD450NX NT Server and the Freedom Storage 5800 are a powerful combination for delivering timely information to help business managers make better decisions," said Dave Davenport, Vice President, Enterprise Architecture and Technology. "Besides their outstanding performance, these products also deliver Hitachi's unsurpassed reliability."

The TPC-D benchmark, created by the Transaction Processing Performance Council (TPC), demonstrates data warehousing and decision support capabilities using a suite of business-oriented queries and updates. TPC-D results are used by customers to evaluate the performance of various decision support systems by executing sets of queries against a standard database under controlled conditions.

Hitachi Data Systems stated it intends to perform further TPC-D testing on data mart and data warehousing system configurations supporting various-size databases.

"IBM is committed to providing a powerful, flexible, scalable database environment with superior performance on a wide range of systems and platforms," said Jim Kelly, Vice President, Data Management Marketing, IBM Software Solutions. "The benchmark results achieved by Hitachi Data Systems with IBM DB2 Universal Database underscore that commitment and are great news for our mutual customers."

The system configuration tested by Hitachi Data Systems at its Open Systems Laboratory in Santa Clara included the following components:

Server: Hitachi AD450NX NT

Processors: Four Intel Pentium II Xeon 400 MHz

Operating system: Microsoft Windows NT Version 4.0/SP4

Storage subsystem: Hitachi Freedom Storage 5800 with 582GB capacity

Database: IBM DB2 Universal Database Version 5.2.0

The following results of testing this configuration were reported to TPC on February 15, 1999:

Test HDS Results

TPC-D Power Metric (QppD@30GB): 2,261.2

TPC-D Throughput Metric (QthD@30GB): 325.9

TPC-D Performance Metric (QphD@30GB): 858.4

TPC-D Price Performance Metric ($/QphD@30GB): $233

This benchmark result exceeded the next-best Power metric by more than three times and the next-best Price Performance metric by more then seven times.
