Business Challenge

As a leading international IT services company, Atos Origin takes seriously its responsibility to deliver continuously improved offerings for both new and existing clients in order to stay at the head of the market. After supplying consulting, systems integration and managed operations to a major UK health care provider for seven years, Atos Origin sought Hitachi Data Systems, support in implementing an innovative IT architecture to meet its customers’ changing demands and industry challenges.

Solution

Atos Origin also required an IT Infrastructure Library (ITIL) driven service, which provides not only the storage hardware, but also a range of other services, including capacity and supplier management, service reporting, ongoing support and maintenance, and annual training. Atos Origin staff members were provided with training on how to manage the environment on a daily basis.

The infrastructure installed at the primary datacentre comprised Hitachi Lightning 9900™ V series enterprise storage servers to support the majority of the electronic records system. The Kodak Carestream PACS is held on a Hitachi Workgroup Modular Storage WMS100 model, with further tape backup on a Bull Sun StorageTek L180 tape library. This environment is replicated to the health care organisation’s backup site using Hitachi TrueCopy® Remote Replication software.

The storage architecture initially held a total of 6.6TB across the two datacentre sites, with 1TB backed up daily. This capacity is expected to grow rapidly on the pay-as-you-go utility system, including an estimated 200TB for the PACS over the next five to ten years.

Results

Since the implementation, Atos Origin can guarantee unlimited capacity at any time to its client. Bready explains, "For a recent urgent test, we were able to provide almost 1TB on demand. The ITIL Managed Service means we can provide additional capacity and connectivity for any storage service class almost at the drop of a hat."
