The ABCs of Managing Unstructured Data
Organizations should "Archive first, Backup less, Consolidate more" to gain better control over their datas

Joe Ong

"The explosive growth of unstructured data presents organizations with unprecedented challenges in data management and protection", said Mr Joe Ong (left), Managing Director of Hitachi Data Systems Singapore. To address these issues, Hitachi Data Systems advocates the ABC approach, which is to "Archive first, Backup less, Consolidate more".

In a presentation at the recent Fuji Xerox DocuWorld on 15-16 August, Mr Colin Tan, Director for File, Content & Cloud Solutions for ASEAN at Hitachi Data Systems, highlighted how organizations can reduce backup costs by up to 60 per cent and management costs by 25 per cent by applying the ABC strategy - Archiving to a more cost effective tier of storage, which dramatically reduces Backup costs and frees up primary storage to enable Consolidation. Honing your business continuity planning skills
In today’s highly-competitive world of just-in-time delivery, global supply chains and 24x7 customer demand, downtime can have very costly implications for businesses. To help customers manage this risk, Hitachi Data Systems recently organised a workshop on "Business Continuity Planning – Reducing Backup Windows" in partnership with Cisco and NCS. Held at the Cisco Systems Singapore Office on 16 August 2012, the workshop was led by Pre-Sales Manager Mr Charles Chow. Key topics that were covered during the three-and-a-half-hour session included assessing business challenges, building a sound disaster recovery plan, defining the Recovery Time Objective (RTO) and Recovery Point Objective (RPO), and overcoming the backup window trap.
